how to make money online as an australian?

If you're one of the many Australians who are currently sitting at home or working from home and want to earn a little extra money, there are plenty of ways to make a living without having to get off the couch or dining room table. We've rounded up 10 ways to make money from home and spoke to an Australian mum who has turned her sticker planning business into a lucrative side business.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rapid change of location and way of working for many Australians. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the number of people working from home increased dramatically during the pandemic (from 24% before March 2020 to over 40% by August 2021).

how to make money online as an austarlian?

Seven years ago, Australian mum Karen Lee started a home-based business while she was on maternity leave with her son. She started selling handmade gifts, which soon turned into handmade party clothes. Although Karen enjoyed making banners, cake toppers and other party accessories, she told Canstar that the process was time-consuming and unprofitable, so she focused on the world of stickers for planners.

"I was using planners to organize my work, my business and my personal life, and then I noticed that people were buying stickers every week to stick on their planners to make them prettier," she explains.

"About a year ago, I was selling my stickers under the Party Shop brand when I decided it was time to rebrand to Pretty Planner Studio."

Karen now creates planner stickers with her own "kawaii" drawings, as well as illustrations by other local artists she likes to support. The "kawaii" art incorporates large eyes, rounded shapes and simple facial features and references the aesthetic of the "cuteness" trend that originated in Japan.

"I also put my designs on accessories such as scrapbooks, albums, bags and acrylic pins, and every month I have a children's stationery box with a new theme," she tells Canstar.

Karen sells her planner stickers and other accessories through her own website, Pretty Planner Studio, as well as through her e-commerce site, Etsy, which she says makes it easy for potential customers to discover her business.

As for her creative income, Karen says it depends on how much time she can devote to her business, as she also works full-time.

"In a strong month, I can make $3,500 in sales, and I work part-time at the store," she says.

"My free hours in my business are sometimes limited to writing and order processing, and I have little time for strategic planning, marketing and new product development. But when I have more time to devote to my business, my sales increase accordingly."

Karen said she plans to create digital products soon and hopes to one day make her side business a full-time job.

"It's my passion, my creative outlet, and it brings me a lot of joy," he said in an interview with Canstar.

For those looking to start a home-based business, Karen says planning is key.

"Write down all your ideas, create a vision board and determine what steps you need to take to grow your business."

"Do your research... Join business groups on Facebook to learn and ask questions. And when you set up your digital store, turn up the volume so you can hear the pleasant 'ka-ching' sound when you make the first of many sales."

Let's start with ideas that involve using assets or items you already own.

1. Selling unwanted items online.

Do you have unused clothing, jewelry, or sports equipment that's gathering dust in a drawer or closet? Or a piece of furniture or household appliance that you no longer use? There are now many websites, platforms, and apps for selling these unwanted items online, such as eBay, Gumtree, and Facebook Marketplace. When pricing an item, be sure to check the prices of similar items on the platform you've chosen and take into account the original value of the item and its current condition. You might be surprised how much people are willing to pay for your forgotten items.

2. Freelancing with your skills

Another way to earn money from the comfort of your home is to offer your skills for various tasks or projects online. For example, if you're a writer, graphic designer, or developer, you can sell those skills and find clients or companies willing to pay you for them online.

There are now several platforms (often called digital or crowd marketplaces) available to help you sell services to individuals and businesses online, such as Airtasker, Freelancer, and Fiverr.

When you sign up for these platforms, you often need to first create a profile with your skills and experience, and then you can usually browse and bid for specific job offers. If your bid is successful, you will get the job done and receive the agreed-upon amount. These platforms may deduct a service or project fee from the amount earned, so it is important that you familiarize yourself with these fees or charges before you sign up. If you choose Freelancer, the company recommends being competitive on some assignments, especially in the early stages when you are still building your reputation, but don't underestimate yourself if you feel your work is truly above average.

3. making and selling handmade items

If you have a talent for arts and crafts, you can make money by making and selling handmade products online, such as jewelry and fashion accessories, clothing, and household items. There are several online platforms where you can sell these products, such as Etsy, Shopify, and Amazon.

Before you start turning your handmade items into additional income, it may be a good idea to roughly calculate whether you can generate enough income from selling your items to cover the costs associated with producing the necessary supplies (e.g., materials, labels, packaging) and any other additional costs (e.g., listing fees).

4. complete online surveys

If you have free time, you can complete online surveys to earn extra money. Some companies offer cash for market research and others offer vouchers, with the total amount varying depending on the platform. You can also earn extra money by referring friends to take surveys. Some platforms include Octopus Group, Swagbucks, Triaba, and PrizeRebel. Before signing up, research the platform to see if its reward system works for you.

5. Create a blog

Blogging has become a more common way to make money online, but creating and making money from your own blog can take a lot of work, and competition from other bloggers can be fierce. You can create a blog on a variety of platforms such as WordPress, Blogger, Weebly, Tumblr, Wix, and Squarespace. You will then need to start publishing and generating traffic to your blog and consider spreading the word through other platforms such as social media. The more traffic your blog has, the easier it will be for you to establish partnerships to monetize your blog later on.

Ways to monetize your blog include selling advertising space, writing sponsored posts (e.g. writing paid promotional content), providing product reviews, or selling content to other news sites or digital media. How much money you can make from your blog depends on several factors, such as the quality of your content, the competitiveness of your topic, the appeal and retention of your audience, and how you can generate traffic from that audience.

6. online teacher

If you have teaching or tutoring experience or expertise in certain areas, you can choose to work as an online tutor. Online tutoring jobs can be found on sites like Cluey, Tutors Field, Tutify, and The Tutoring Company, or you can look for online tutoring jobs on crowdsourcing platforms like Freelancer, Fiverr, or Airtasker. You can also teach a language online, such as English, especially if you are bilingual and have teaching or tutoring experience, although this is not always a requirement.
